Counselling Service – Brad’s Story

Brad was an 11 year old who was full of anger and hatred for his father who had left his mother, himself and his siblings for another woman and child. He did not want contact and could not even call him Dad. He felt protective of his mum and looked after her whilst needing a lot of her attention.

With the help of Off the Record’s counselling service, Brad learnt ways of coping with his sadness and anxieties and began to accept other family members as they are. His anger towards his father decreased and he began to respect himself and see his own strengths. He also created a leaflet called ‘What to do when parents split up’, which is used with other young people going through similar situations at Off the Record.
